As an American, I have noticed it is uncommon to be leisurely or look at what peeks our interest in our daily routine because we are constantly moving from one place to the other.
I grew up being encouraged to be active and outdoors as often as possible. I remember from a young age taking the time to hike, camp, ski, and anything else that meant being outside. My upbringing allowed me to appreciate and form a connection to the pine trees, flowers, and high altitude of Colorado, which is a combination for happiness.
My work is about the dual appearance of flowers. An effortless form at first glance, but becomes elaborate as you get close. I want to remind my audience of the underlying beauty and complexity that is in each flower surrounding our natural landscape. I gravitate towards peonies and roses because the petal count is complex and intricate, creating uplifting details. Apart from these flowers, I like to work with big flowers that take up space, my favorite being lilies because they are beautiful in contrast with my colorful and brightly painted abstract backgrounds.
I hope that my audience will be inspired after considering what is taken for granted if not placed directly in front of us.
